The idea
On a personal plan, Claude remembers things from your chats unless you switch it off.
Memory means Claude keeps notes from past chats, like your role or your projects, and uses them later. It saves you explaining yourself twice. Some people like that. Some would rather start fresh every time. Both are fine.
On Free, Pro and Max, memory is on from the start. On Team and Enterprise it starts off, and only an Owner can turn it on for the company.
Three clicks
- 1
Open Settings
Click your initials or name in the lower-left corner, then Settings.
- 2
Open Memory
Choose Memory and find the switch called Generate memory from chats.
- 3
Choose
On or off. Either is fine. The point is that you chose.
Make the call
Go to Settings, then Memory. Turn Generate memory from chats on or off. While you're there, look at what Claude has saved. You can edit or delete anything you'd rather it didn't keep.
Then note your choice, so future you knows why:
Memory is [on or off] because [your reason].
No switch? On Team and Enterprise, an Owner decides whether memory is available. If it's off for your company, you won't see the setting. That's not something you did.
And if it is on at work: Owners can't view or edit your memories.
