The idea

Claude is safe for most work. A few kinds of information should never go in, no matter how convenient.

Do

A rough draft with names swapped for roles, like “the client.” Meeting notes, public documents, your own to-do list.

Don't

Passwords, card numbers, patient details, salaries, or anything your company keeps inside.

Keep out, always:

  • Passwords and security codes.
  • Card numbers, bank details, government ID numbers.
  • Patient records or anything covered by privacy law in your field.
  • Anything your company's policy names.

Usually fine: drafts, meeting notes, public documents, your own to-do list.

Your turn

Draw your line

Write one sentence, in your own words, that starts with "I will never paste…". Keep it somewhere you'll see it.

If your company has an AI policy, find it. If you're not sure whether it exists, here's a message you can send to your manager or IT:

Hi, I'm learning to use Claude for work. Is there a written policy on what I can and can't put into it? Thanks.

Why this matters

You'll use Claude more confidently when you know the line. Most people find the line is generous.

Quick check

One question, no gradeA customer's full card number is in an email you want summarized. What do you do?
